SOLAR STORMS TO RADIO WAVES

Did you know that you rely on information carried by radio waves everyday? Cell phone calls, news on the radio, GPS navigation systems, TV programs, and wireless networks, are just some of the essential technologies made possible by radio waves!  Solar Storms to Radio Waves, a new exhibit at The Discovery Museums, explores the world of radio waves and how they are affected by space weather in the Earth's upper atmosphere caused by storms on the Sun. Discover how to block radio waves with everyday materials. Marvel at the dynamic nature of the Sun as you control actual videos of solar explosions and auroras through automated graphics of the solar wind, magnetic fields, and space weather models using the interactive Spin Browser. Meet scientists who study space weather and radio waves at special programs.

Solar Storms to Radio Waves is a collaboration between The Discovery Museums and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Haystack Observatory and has been funded through a grant from the National Science Foundation.

After you have visited Solar Storms to radio Waves, try some of these activities at home.
